EVP-(Electronic Voice Phenomena)-The disembodies voices of what is believed to be spirits. These voices are not heard while a recording is being performed but are heard when the recording is played back. Similar to another phenomenon called ITC or Instrumental Transcommunication.
EMF-(Electromagnetic Field)-Measured with an EMF detector or gaussmeter. Measuring the magnitude and direction of a magnetic field. Working theory is that an entity emits a measurable change in the field or emits it's own field.
T.H.O.R.'s take- Is the change in the field directly due to the entities existence or is it a kind of side effect of it's attempts to manifest or communicate. In other words. Within the EMF readings is there a stepping off point where the readings go from purely showing the entities existence and where they start showing an attempt to manifest. Although the accepted range in the field is 2.0 to about 6.0. our experience has shown that there is very little data supporting this range. We feel there is too much emphasis being place on EMF readings and are actively exploring other types of energy that may be effected or generated by paranormal activity. Our experiences have also brought into question the reliability of many of the more popular meters currently being used in the field such as the Sperry and the K-2. The K-2 which has been used on many television programs and has been examined by T.H.O.R. is highly susceptible to electronic devices that are active within it's range. For these reasons we find the K-2 both unreliable and dismiss all results obtained during the question and answer sessions it has become famous for. We favor the Tri-Field and Natural Tri-Field meters for their sensitivity, audio signal and the ability to set the meter to read electric, radio and magnetic settings.
T.H.O.R.'s take- Ultimately we want to figure out if there is a frequency at which these sounds or voices are being broadcast that is out of the range of human hearing or the possibility these sounds are being directly imprinted on the audio devices themselves much as radio transmissions are not heard until the signal is received and broadcast through a radio. We have also learned that the capture of EVP's is largely influenced by the recording devices being used. We highly recommend using high quality digital recorders which although somewhat pricey tend to give a better quality audio that isn't corrupted by the limitations of the electronics and circuitry within the recorder. We have found the cheaper recorders not only yield poor quality audio but they also have a "fingerprint" or audio signature that can make analysis difficult and even create false EVP's. We recommend using Olympus recorders if possible.
ORB- An anomaly that although typically not scene at the time of the photograph appears as a ball of light afterwards in the picture. Since there are many natural explanations for these anomalies(insects,dust,reflections.) Orbs are a controversial subject within the field of paranormal investigating.
T.H.O.R.'s take- We almost completely dismiss orbs as legitimate evidence in our investigations however there are times when we will take a second look if they have unusual characteristics. We feel the main reason so many investigators are willing to accept orbs as legitimate evidence is the ease in which they are captured. You can take pictures in your own living room and most likely will catch orbs. There are some claims however that orbs can actually be created in a controlled environment using an electrostatic generator.
UPDATE 3-9-2010- We no longer admit still photos as evidence and take very few if any still photos on our investigations. At this point in time we simply do not trust the validity of still photos. Our experience has shown that there are way to many external factors that influence these images. We believe we are one of the few teams that have adopted this policy.
